My Upstell family history

John Upstell (Upsdale) was born in Hampshire, England about 1785. He and his wife Jane had three boys as far as I can find.

Israel Upstell (Upsdale) married Eliza Knight on 10^th October 1841 at the parish church of Droxton, Hampshire. By 1881 Israel now 73 and along with his wife Eliza 63, were living at 13 Elson Road, Gosport and he was still working as an Agriculture Laborer. Their first-born son William Upstell, now 35 was still living with them and working as a Bricklayer in 1881. Israel and Eliza had 8 children

1.           Eliza Ann Upstell b. 25^th Feb 1842, in Owslebury, Hampshire. In April 1861 age 19 in the town of Portsea she married Martin Kelly b. 1842, Galway, Ireland. Eliza lived in Portsea, Jersey, Isle of Wight, Gosport and Titchfield. In 1871 Eliza’s mother Elizabeth Upstell was living with them. Her husband died 1878, Fareham and left her with 6 children. In 1881 she was living in Titchfield running a Sweet Shop with all her 6 children. She then married William Brill in Oct 1887 in Fareham and by 1891 is living in Southampton, along with her daughter Catherine, (Kate Brill). Well in 1901 she was working as a Lodging House Keeper of Shakespeare House, French St, Southampton. Her daughter Eliza lives with her and 2 servants plus a lot of lodgers.  Her husband William Brill is listed as a lodger though? And Eliza isn’t using her married name but going by Eliza Kelly. She died the same year at 59 years old.

2.          William Upstell b. 18^th April 1845, in Warnford, Hampshire. He married Ann Minall in 1883 and had 7 children. He died November 1923 in Gosport and Ann died in Gosport, 1928. They adopted a son Walter Meech b. 1896 Gosport, d. 16 Feb 1951

3.          Emily Upstell b. 5^th June 1847 in Wymering, Hampshire. She was 27 when she married Charles William Jerome in Alverstoke. He was b. 1845 in Alverstoke and died 1^st March 1921 in Hampshire. They had 3 sons and one daughter,

4.        Edward Upstell b. 5^th May 1848, Alverstoke, d. 8^th Feb 1849, Elson

5.          James Charles Upstell b. 9^th May 1851, Alverstoke. He married Elizabeth Pink in July 1874, Alverstoke. They lived in Cornwall for over 20 years and had 7 children. James worked as a Coast Guard and in 1891 moved the entire family to Ireland. There he was working as a Station Officer for the Coast Guard. He died in 1930, Belfast, Ireland. When he moved to Ireland he changed the way he spelt Upstell, he changed it to Upstall with an ‘a’.

6.         Alfred Upstell b. 18^th Feb 1854 in Gosport. (my Great Great Grandfather) Alfred married Emily Burbidge on October 1878 in Alverstoke, Hampshire. By the next Census in 1881 he and his family were living in Benholm, Scotland. His occupation was as a Boatman H.M. Coastguard. In the 1891 Census he was now a Chief Boatman for the Coastguard and living at 65 Smiths Building, Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland. Alfred and Emily had 10 children but sadly two sons died as infants, Alfred John Upstell d.1882 and Arthur William Upstell d.1887.

7.          Ellen Upstell b. 18^th June 1857, Alverstoke. She married in Alverstoke on 30^th March 1872, aged only 14. Her husband William Buckland, 1847-1893. They had 8 children but sadly two daughters died as infants in the same year. Then a son dies in 1890, her husband dies 1893 and she looses three sons during WW1. Her first son and last child born are the only ones to live into adulthood.

8.         Agnes Grace Upstell b. 6^th April 1859, Fareham. She married Henry Hyde (1859-1927) in July 1889, Lymington. They had only one child. Agnes died June 1929 in Lymington.

May Upstell & her second husband Samuel J Bohea

2.          May Maud Upstell married Frederick Dicks (1882-1922) on 23^rd December 1916 in Alverstoke. Sadly he died in January 1922 at the age of 39. He is buried at Annes Hill in Gosport. May remarried on 17^th June 1933 to widower Samuel John Bohea (1866-1938). May never had any children but her second husband Samuel did and she lived to be 92. She died in October 1980, Droxford.

3.          Rose Alice Upstell married Frederick Thomas Hewitt on 19^th April, 1913 in Alverstoke. They had 4 sons and 4 daughters. Rose died aged 87 at QA hospital on 1^st March 1978, she was living at 21 Agnew House, Mill Lane, Gosport and buried on 7^th March at Anne’s Hill, plot 215, space 47. Frederick lived a long life and died at the age of 97 on 1^st March 1986. At the time of his death he was living at 133 Charden Road, Gosport but died at 7 Yarborough Rd, Southsea. He was buried at Anns Hill on 11^th March.

Ada Mary Upstell

4.    Ada Mary Upstell was my Great Grandmother. She was born in Scotland whilst her father was posted there as part of the Coastguard. She married John Hulse on 27^th November 1915, Gosport and had three sons and one daughter. I’ve been told she was a lovely lady who put up with a lot from her husband. She sadly was sick for sometime and was looked after by her children.  Ada died in 1942 at home, 40 Freemantle Rd, Gosport age 48. She died of Mitral Stenosis, a heart disease normally caused by rheumatic fever. She was sick for quite some years, it causes serve disability. Her daughter Doreen Hulse was the informant and living at the same address. She is buried at Ann’s Hill cemetery, plot 173, space 63, sadly with no headstone.

5.          Edith Dorothy Upstell married John William Herbert Morley 14^th Nov 1925 in Alverstoke. They had one daughter, Catherine, who has recently helped me fill in some missing family history. John was also in the RM band and there is a photo of Edith & Ada (sisters) in their husbands RM band uniform. Catherine cleared this photo mystery up for me. My grandfather Frank would visit his aunt Edie once or twice a year, she was also at his wedding in 1949.

6.         Edgar Guy Upstell fought during both world wars and was a bandmaster. He was born 8^th Feb 1899 in Bexhill, Sussex and married Edith Mead on 23^rd November 1925 in Portsmouth. They never had children and are both buried on the Isle of Wight. Edgar died 8^th Dec 1985 age 86. At one stage Edgar was in possession of the Family Bible and apparently gave it to my grandfather Frank (Edgar’s nephew).

7.          Frank Upstell was the last child of Alfred & Emily, born in Alverstoke and lived there all his life. At 23 he married Nellie Russell (1907-1995) on 7^th September 1929 in Gosport. They had three daughters and one son. I remember meeting Frank and his wife when I was a young boy. They lived in the same block of flats that my father’s mother lived, Audrey Gullidge. Nellie died a year after Frank did.
